To install decomposed granite on a patio or walkway, mark the installation area, remove the sod, install edging and weed-deterrent fabric, add gravel, and cover it with decomposed granite. The required supplies are stakes, a mallet, string, a shovel, landscape edging, weed-deterrent fabric, gravel, decomposed granite and a compactor.
- Mark the installation area
Mark the corners of the installation area with wooden stakes, and connect them with string.
- Remove the sod
Remove the sod and all other vegetation. Remove 8 to 12 inches of soil, and make sure that the excavated work area contains no visible roots.
- Install landscape edging
Apply landscape edging to the perimeter of the installation site, and cover the entire area with weed-deterrent fabric. Remove the string and perimeter stakes.
- Lay the gravel base
Cover the fabric with 4 to 6 inches of gravel. Smooth the gravel surface with the back of a shovel.
- Cover the gravel with decomposed granite
Pour 4 inches of decomposed granite on top of the gravel. Distribute it with a shovel, and then tamp it down with a rolling compactor. Add more granite, and compact it again. Continue adding and compacting the granite until it is 4 to 6 inches deep.
