Most private insurance companies, as well as Medicare, cover costs for in-home INR blood testing supplies for individuals who meet certain criteria. Some testing supply companies can communicate directly with the insurance companies on behalf of patients to determine coverage.

To qualify for coverage of INR blood testing kits, most insurance companies require that patients carry a diagnosis such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, venous thromboembolism or hypercoagulable state. Patients with atrial fibrillation or a mechanical heart valve may also qualify. Many insurance companies also require that patients have taken warfarin for at least three months, and be physically able to do the tests or have a capable caretaker.
