What is an international drivers license?

An international driving permit is an official translation of a drivers license that may be used when traveling abroad. This permit may be used in some countries that do not recognize a drivers license issued by another government. International driving permits are not accepted by every government.

International driving permits obtained in the United States are issued by both the American Automobile Association and the National Automobile Club. When driving in a country that accepts an international driving permit, drivers must carry both their permit and drivers license. Those wishing to obtain this permit must do so in their country of citizenship.
