Yale University coach Walter Camp invented the rules of football. Camp is considered the "father of American football." The game, started in 1879, is derived mainly from rugby and association football, which is now commonly known as soccer in the United States.
Both of these games evolved from versions of football played in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Other major contributors to the birth of American football were Eddie Cochems, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Knute Rockne and Glenn Warner. Professional football started in 1892, and the National Football League was started in 1920. The 1958 NFL championship game is credited with spearheading the popular rise of American football.
