Who invented volleyball?

Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 at a YMCA in Holyoke, Mass. He originally called it mintonette, but when a spectator at a demonstration of the game said that the sport entailed "volleying," the name of the game was changed to volleyball.

According to Volleyball1on1, William Morgan invented volleyball because he wanted a sport that, unlike basketball, involved less running. He put a badminton net in a gym and used the bladder, or the rubber inside, of an old soccer ball. The original name "mintonette" came from the idea that the original sport was like badminton. Every year in the United States, the Morgan Trophy Award is given to the best male and female college volleyball players.
