A spike in volleyball is an attack strategy used to hit the ball over the net to the opposing team in a way that is difficult to return. A spike is generally hit at a downward angle with great force.
In order to legally spike the ball from the net, the player must be a front-row player. Back-row players can spike the volleyball from behind the 10-foot line, but this is much more difficult and is normally only done by skilled players. A spike is usually accomplished by taking several approach steps and jumping off with both feet before striking the ball.
