The Hubble Space Telescope was invented by Lyman Spitzer, who first proposed the concept in 1946. Spitzer, a native of Toledo, Ohio, continued analyzing photos from the Hubble Space Telescope until his passing in 1997.
Though invented by Spitzer, the Hubble Space Telescope was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble, who used his observations to suggest that the universe was expanding. Spitzer's telescope was approved by NASA in 1968 and was supposed to be deployed in 1979. Because of technical difficulties and the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the telescope was not launched until 1990 where it was deployed by astronauts on the space shuttle Discovery.
