The lawn mower was invented by English engineer Edwin Beard Budding in 1830. He was inspired to develop the lawn mower after seeing a bladed reel at a cloth mill and realizing that it could be adapted for grounds maintenance.
Budding's first lawn mower was developed in partnership with fellow English engineer John Ferrabee. It was a reel-style mower pushed from behind, featuring a 19-inch wide body made entirely of cast iron. The clippings from the mower were deposited in a tray forward of the main body. The rear rollers operated gearing that powered the spinning bladed cylinder. Budding and Ferrabee allowed companies of the time to license and sell copies of their designs.
