It is unknown as to who invented the recorder. The musical instrument is pictured in early medieval artwork, and it may have been played in Europe as early as the 11th century.
Recorders appear in medieval artwork, and recorder-like pipe instruments appear in artwork dating back to the 11th century. The oldest surviving recorder was made between 1335 and 1418. The Renaissance period was a transitional time for this instrument. It became a solo instrument in the Baroque era, with a two-octave scale and a more pronounced taper. In subsequent eras, the instrument and its scale were improved and standardized.
