Who invented the tank?

No single individual is credited with inventing the modern battle tank. Leonardo Di Vinci and H.G. Wells are both considered to have envisioned the armored fighting vehicle, but neither constructed such a device. The first tanks were born from simultaneous international military evolutions.
In 1915, England was the first country to successfully build a tracked, armored and armed vehicle. A committee was formed by British military authorities to create a land-based equivalent of the naval battleship. The design began with a civilian tractor to which armor and weapons were added. The early prototypes gave way to the first fielded tank, the Mark I.
