What is involved in calcification?

Calcification involves the building up of calcium deposits in the body tissues, according to HealthGrades. It can cause symptoms such as severe bone pain, headache and pain in the pelvis, lower back and abdomen. These symptoms need immediate treatment.

Calcification can occur as a response to conditions such as infections, trauma, injuries and autoimmune disorders, says HealthGrades. When it occurs, the calcium deposits cause tissue hardening over time, which can lead to blockage of blood vessels in the affected tissue and the eventual disruption of the organ's normal functioning. In the heart, for instance, calcification in the mitral and aortic valves affects the heart's pumping ability.
