What does IPA stand for?

IPA stands for India Pale Ale and refers to a style of beer that was first developed in England over 175 years ago. The first recorded mention of IPA was in 1801 as part of a shipment of beer made to the East India Trading Company.
Early IPA brews used pale malt and were lightly hopped, making IPAs very different from other pale ales produced from the mid-18th century onward. IPAs produced in the United States vary greatly in hop intensity and malt flavor. Breweries based on the East Coast, for example, use European hops, which tend to have a spicier taste.
