Does irregular bleeding signal menopause?

Irregular bleeding can occur as a result of perimenopause, according to the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. Perimenopause occurs before full menopause, as hormone levels change and affect ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Irregular bleeding, spotting and changes in the length of the menstrual cycle are common.

Though some irregular bleeding can be normal from time to time, it also be a sign of other underlying medical conditions in some cases. Other common causes of irregular bleeding or spotting between periods are infection, uterine fibroids or polyps, cancer, complications with pregnancy, and hormonal imbalance, according to Healthline. Heavy bleeding or bleeding that lasts longer than normal should be reported to a doctor, according to ACOG.
