When was Israel created and by whom?

On Nov. 29, 1947, the United Nations passed Resolution 181, creating the Jewish state of Israel in Palestine. Israel was proclaimed on May 14, 1948, by the head of the Jewish Agency, David Ben-Gurion. The United States recognized the establishment of Israel the very same day.

Although the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, the British controlled the area by colonial mandate and were not ready to relinquish the land to a Jewish state due to their relationship with the Arab people in the region. The mandate ended in May 1948 and the resolution went into effect. In addition to the Jewish state, the resolution also allotted a portion of Palestine to form an Arab state.
