Titles of books should be italicized in works written in most academic papers. When Associated Press style is used, the title of a book is enclosed in quotation marks.
Different punctuation is used to offset a title from the content of the sentence. Academic works are usually written in either American Psychological Association or Modern Language Association of America style. Italics are used for book titles in both APA and MLA style.
AP style is traditionally used by journalists and does not allow book titles to be italicized or underlined. Instead, book titles are enclosed by quotation marks in AP style.
