Are Jack Reacher novels written to be read in order of their release?

The Jack Reacher novel series has been written largely in chronological order, and the titular main character's background has evolved throughout it. However, author Lee Child wrote each story to stand alone, and some do not even reference others, so ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

The style and content of the series has evolved since its initial inception, and as a result, many readers prefer to read the series in the order of publication. As of 2015, there are two prequels in the series, meant to precede the events of the first 1997 novel, "Killing Floor," but they were published in 2004 and 2011 respectively.
