What is a Japanese dining table?

A traditional Japanese dining table is a low table with cushions for sitting or kneeling. As of October 2014, contemporary designs include low, wooden chairs to make sitting at the table more comfortable.

Japanese dining tables place the seat of honor, or the "kamiza," furthest from the entrance. The least-important guest sits closest to the entrance. In a formal setting, men and women kneel under the table. When dining casually, men sit cross-legged and women sit with their legs to the side. Although many restaurants in Japan in 2014 have Western dining tables, some still adhere to the traditional seating.
