JCAHO is an abbreviation that stands for Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The organization is made up of representatives from the private sector who develop and maintain standards of quality for medical facilities.
JCAHO accreditation is obtainable by various types of health care organizations, such as hospitals, medical offices, nursing homes, surgery centers, behavioral health treatment centers and home-care providers.
Certification by JCAHO is available for programs or services that are based within a health care organization. Two examples of this type are certifications for diabetes or heart disease care for medical centers who are already accredited by JCAHO.
