The Jeep Liberty Diesel engine is built by an Italian company called VM Motori, which is in-part owned by Detroit Diesel. The engine is a 2.70-liter model that produces 160 horsepower at 295 lbs.-feet of torque.
The most prominent feature on a Jeep Liberty diesel was its fuel economy. The lure of a diesel engine is its capability of producing power, while maintaining sufficient gas mileage. Although designed using a four-cylinder engine, the mid-sized SUV manages to achieve approximately 24 mpg.
The engine itself is commonly referred to as a common rail diesel, or CRD. The CRD uses a common rail injection fuel system, that uses injectors, which push fuel out at pressures close to 24,000 lbs. per square inch.
