As of 2015, the Jeep Wrangler does not come with a diesel engine option in the U.S. market, although Jeep offers a diesel in some international markets. Rumors point to a potential diesel engine on the next-generation Wrangler.
Each North American-market 2015 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited model comes equipped with Fiat-Chrysler Automotive's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine making 285 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. All trim levels come standard with a five-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic is available as an option. In some other world markets, Jeep offers the Wrangler with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that briefly saw duty in the United States on the Jeep Liberty.
Citing sources within Fiat-Chrysler who wish to remain anonymous, TruckTrend reports that the next-generation Wrangler will offer a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 turbodiesel engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Jeep plans to release its redesigned Wrangler for the 2017 model year.
