Joining the VFW Ladies Auxiliary requires filling out an online application and paying a membership fee. A member must be a citizen of the United States or a U.S. national and at least 16 years old.

Organizers founded the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in 1914 for women to support veterans, and it grew to become one of the nation's largest military service and support organizations. In late 2015, the organization opened its membership to men for the first time and changed its name to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. During the 2014-2015 program year, VFW Auxiliary members provided $4.6 million to veterans, active-duty military and their families.
