What was Jonathan Aitken convicted of?

Former British Cabinet minister and member of Parliament Jonathan Aitken was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice in 1999. He received an 18-month sentence for each of the two charges set to run concurrently, and he served a total of 7 months in prison for the crimes.

The British daily newspaper The Guardian broke a story in 1995 telling of improper dealings Aitken and a partner had with Saudi Arabia regarding British arms. Aitken vehemently denied all such allegations and vowed to fight them, filing libel suits against the newspaper and the television program "World in Action." His case eventually fell apart, and Aitken admitted his wrongdoing.
