What is JSON?

JSON is an acronym short for JavaScript Object Notation, which is a method of storing data in a format that is easy to access and organize. The format allows developers and users to read through the data as it is rendered in human-readable text or data sets.
The JSON data format was developed by State Software Inc. and its co-founder Douglas Crockford. It was developed out of an identified need for a data format that can facilitate real-time communication between the browser and server without using plugins such as Java or Flash. The first buyers of the JSON system included Sun Microsystems, EDS and Amazon.
