Node.js is a runtime system developed to facilitate the creation of networking and server-side applications. Applications developed using Node.js are written using Javascript, and the system is compatible with Windows, Linux, OS X and FreeBSD. As of 2014, code executed through Node.js uses the Google V8 JavaScript engine.
Node.js was originally developed by Ryan Dahl and sees continued development by Node.js developers and Joyent and Github contributors as of 2014. The first version of the program was released on May 27, 2009. As of 2014, Node.js has seen adoption as a platform on the server-side by companies such as Groupon, LinkedIn, Paypal and Walmart.
