How do you judge the wear on tires?

Judge wear in a tire's tread by inserting a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head facing downwards. If Lincoln's head is completely visible, the tire needs replacing. This shows that the tire's tread is less than two-thirtyseconds of an inch deep, the recommended threshold for replacement.
Alternatively, many tires have an indicator bar molded into the tire groove. If the tread is flush with the indicator bar, it is time to replace the tire.
In addition to the tire tread, examine the sidewall of the tire for any cracks or damage. Shallow cracks are okay but should be watched. If there are any deep cracks or punctures, replace the tire.
