What keeps lizards away?

The most effective method of keeping lizards away is to make the area less hospitable. Commercially available chemical and electric repellents sometimes work, but these are potentially harmful to children and pets.
Master Gardener Walter Reeves cautions against using folk remedies such as kerosene or sulfur, as they typically are ineffective. Instead of using a repellent, he suggests removing things that attract lizards, such as sources of food and shelter. Lizards eat insects and prefer warm, bright and humid areas. Sealing the home's foundation against insects removes a potential food source, and removing trash and other debris around the home takes away their hiding places.
