The Oklahoma redbud, the state tree of Oklahoma, grows bright pink to red buds or blossoms on its leafless branches in early spring. After flowering, the tree has dark, glossy leaves as well as purple pods of seeds that stay on the branches even after the leaves fall in winter.
The Oklahoma redbud usually spreads to a round shape and reaches 12 to 18 feet in height. The flowers resemble half-inch-wide pea blossoms and grow in groups of four to 10. Its leaves are 3 to 5 inches long and turn yellow in autumn. In Oklahoma, the species commonly grows in gorges and valleys.
