Some key reasons for retiring are leisure time, grandchildren, stress at work, hobbies and travel, according to Fidelity Investments. Many people view retirement as a new stage of life and enter it for reasons that are not financial.

In a survey of 2,293 retirees, 72 percent saw leisure time as a key reason to retire, while 64 percent chose stress at work as one of their reasons for retirement, notes Fidelity Investments. Sixty-two percent of retirees retired to spend more time with their grandchildren. More than half of the retirees surveyed also considered travel or hobbies as a somewhat strong or very strong reason to retire.
