The most effective treatment for demodex mites is metronidazole cream, sold under the brand name Flagyl. Applying the cream twice daily to the affected areas should lead to an improvement of symptoms in approximately three weeks.

Demodex mites live in a person's hair follicles and are generally harmless. When they overpopulate and spread to the face, they frequently cause acne and rosacea. Before applying metronidazole cream, one should wash the area with mild soap for about 15 to 20 minutes. The cream is applied in a thin layer and gently rubbed it into the skin. One should avoid getting the cream in the eye area, and a moisturizer and makeup can be applied over the cream.
