Some of the bacteria that have been associated with high school locker rooms include MRSA and C. diff. Both of these bacteria lead to illness, but can be eliminated, or at least prevented, from spreading through good hygiene.
MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is caused by an antibiotic-resistant strain of staph bacteria. It causes pain and skin boils, among other symptoms, and is spread by skin-to-skin contact.
C. diff, or Clostridium difficile, is an bacteria that attacks the intestinal lining, causing pain, diarrhea, fever and weight loss. In severe cases, if left untreated, C. diff can lead to death. It tends to be rare among healthy people.
