What kind of bait is used for a lobster trap?

The most common type of bait for a lobster trap is herring fish, though any kind of fish can be used. Herring is becoming more expensive and harder to find for people who catch lobsters. Lobstermen can use other types of bait or bait fish when herring isn't available.

The traps for lobsters are called lobster pots. These traps are made from wooden and rope frames, though some can be found with plastic-coated chains instead. Once the bait is loaded into the trap, the lobster pots are lowered to the sea floor where they are left for one to two days. The traps are marked with a buoy so that they can be easily found and retrieved later.
