According to WebMD, the prescription cream hydroquinone may be used to treat melasma. Melasma is a kind of hyperpigmentation that appears as brown or tan patches, typically occurring on the face. Melasma can occur in pregnant women and in men. Melasma often goes away on its own after pregnancy.
According to WebMD, people with melasma, or chloasma, are advised to limit exposure to sunlight, wear a hat that provides adequate coverage and put on sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, ideally one containing either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Hyperpigmentation of skin occurs from a melanin increase, and it may also be influenced by some antibiotics, antiarrhythmics and antimalarial drugs.
