The type of driver’s license required to drive a truck varies by the state. Each state has its own set of rules for when a regular license or commercial license is required.
In Alaska, a standard class D driver’s license is all that is needed for noncommercial trucks and other vehicles. There are also class A, class B and class C licenses for different types of commercial truck. The difference depends on the weight and towing capacity of the truck. Florida requires a class E driver’s license for trucks that are considered noncommercial and weigh less than 26,001 lbs. A truck weighing more than this requires a class A, B or C commercial driver’s license.
