"A Kind of Murder," by Hugh Pentecost, is a short story that appeared in "Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine" in August 1962. The story is autobiographical and is based on the author's experiences during his youth when he attended Morgan Military Academy.
In the story, the boys at the academy harass a new teacher who is hard of hearing, until the teacher eventually leaves. There is no actual murder, but the author compares the teacher's defeat to a symbolic death. Hugh Pentecost is the pseudonym of Judson Pentecost Philips, who wrote over 100 mysteries and detective stories under this name. He also used the name Philip Owen as well as his own legal name. He lived from Aug. 10, 1903 to March 7, 1989.
