The type of motor oil to use in a car is specified in its owner's manual. Oil types vary between cars and the environment in which they operate.
Motor oil is vital for the continued functioning of a vehicle. It prevents excessive wear and tear to an engine and needs to be replaced regularly. Many car owners are able to perform this maintenance themselves. Some automotive service technicians recommend oil changes at 3,000- or 5,000-mile intervals.
The American Petroleum Institute sets the minimum performance standards for lubricants. Motor oil is available in conventional, synthetic and synthetic blends. Synthetic oil promotes better engine performance and is more expensive than conventional oil.
