Bamboo is a fast-growing, giant grass with woody stems. Bamboos are dispersed in subtropical and tropical to mild temperate regions, and the majority of this species is located in Southeast and East Asia as well as on various islands in areas such as the Pacific and Indian oceans.

The bamboo plant is used for a number of purposes in Southeast and East Asia. Bamboo seeds are consumed as grain and the young shoots are cooked and eaten as a vegetable in Chinese cuisines. Raw leaves from the plant are often used as a fodder for animals. Various bamboo species, including the Bambusa arundinacea and Dendrocalamus strictus, are used in the process of producing fine-quality paper.
