Aortic valve stenosis is characterized by a narrowing of the aortic valves in the heart, which prevents them from fully opening and obstructs the flow of blood to the aorta and the rest of the body, according to Mayo Clinic. The obstruction forces the heart to work harder to pump blood, and over time, the heart muscle becomes weakened by the additional workload. Surgery is usually required to prevent future serious heart issues.
