What kinds of food do squirrels eat?

Squirrels are mostly vegetarians and eat a diet consisting of nuts, seeds, fruits and some types of green vegetation. Because squirrels are often found in urban environments, they are prone to scavenging what they can from bird feeders, and many people also set out dried ears of corn especially for squirrels.

Squirrels do have a special dietary concern because they cannot digest cellulose. Because of this, their meals center around finding a high concentration of protein and fats, such as those found in nutrient-dense seeds. In times of extreme hunger, squirrels may resort to eating insects or even smaller animals, such as snakes or rodents.
