What kinds of pecans are grown in Missouri?

Pecans grown in Missouri are known generally as Northern Pecans. There are more than 20 varieties of Northern Pecans that have been cultivated to be particularly well-suited to Missouri's soil and climate.

These cultivars are considered "Northern" because they originated in the northernmost areas of the pecan tree's natural growth range. They are referred to by names such as "Shepherd" and "Canton." These pecan varieties can be successfully grown in Missouri's severe winter temperatures and shorter growing season. Compared to the types of pecans grown in the Southern United States, these pecans are sweeter and smaller, averaging approximately 100 to 180 nuts per pound.
