Kiwi fruits are native to China. However, they were imported to New Zealand in the 19th century, where they became a popular crop and spread to other parts of the world.
Kiwi fruits are popular in many different regions in modern day agriculture. California became a strong producing region in the 1960s. Although standard varieties require warmer climates to thrive, hardy varieties can grow in cooler climates such as the northeastern United States. Hardy varieties tend to be smaller and smoother than traditional varieties.
Kiwis require slightly acidic or neutral soil that is rich in nutrients. They thrive in full sun and need lots of water to grow.
