What is a lacecap hydrangea?

The lacecap hydrangea is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It produces large corymbs of blue, pink or white flowers late in spring through summer. Its leaves are dark green and up to 8 inches long.

The shrub originated in Japan and China, and later it became popular with U.S. florists for Easter and Mother’s Day arrangements. Growing them requires a moderate amount of maintenance. The plant needs partial shade, some sun and moist soil that drains well. Trees should be kept away from its root system for best results, and pruning should be performed after the plant flowers. Picked flowers are long-lasting, and they look good dried.
