Lake Champlain is located in North America. It begins in Whitehall, New York, and ends at the Richelieu River in Quebec. The bulk of Lake Champlain is situated within the United States.
Lake Champlain is a natural freshwater lake that stretches 120 miles. It has a shoreline of 587 miles shared by New York, Vermont and Quebec. The lake's maximum width is 12 miles, and this body of water has an elevation of 95.5 feet. The average depth of the lake is 64 feet, but it reaches a maximum depth of 400 feet. There are over 70 islands located along Lake Champlain. It was named after Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who discovered the lake in 1609.
