Why is Lake Hillier pink?

Lake Hillier is about 10 times saltier than the ocean, and its salinity attracts pink algae and archaea, making the water look pink. The lake is located in Western Australia on Middle Island, the largest island that makes up the Recherche Archipelago.

The pink color of the water is a permanent characteristic and does not change when water is transferred to a container. The lake is rich with dye-producing organisms, including Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. Its pink color is brighter when viewed from the air. The lake was first discovered in 1802 by the Flinders expedition, and the water is not harmful to humans.
