What is a pink albino dolphin?

Albino dolphins are otherwise normal dolphins that suffer from a congenital genetic disorder leading to the complete or partial lack of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. The lack of pigment often gives their albino skin a distinctive pink color.

Albinism occurs in many types of whales and dolphins, but the condition is rare and leaves the animal more vulnerable to predation due to its unusual color. Albinism may also lead to an increased risk of skin cancer and other health problems.

In 2007, a pink bottlenose dolphin was spotted in Lake Calcasieu, a salt-water estuary in Louisiana. Dubbed "Pinky," the dolphin has pink eyes and skin and a red-edged dorsal fin.
