Programming on the Ethiopian Satellite Television service is broadcast in Amharic, the world's second most-spoken Semitic language following Arabic. Amharic has been the official working language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since the Middle Ages.

Established in the Netherlands on April 24, 2010, the non-partisan Ethiopian Satellite Television service is an independent media outlet dedicated to promoting the free press, democracy and the rule of law, and to providing free access to information for citizens of Ethiopia. Its operation consists of a main studio based in Amsterdam, and its branch studios are located in Washington, D.C. and London.
