What is lanolin made of?

Lanolin is a waxy substance secreted by mammals that produce wool. Most lanolin is acquired from sheep. Often referred to as wool wax or wool grease, lanolin has more of a waxy composition. It contains cholesterol, lanolin esters, lanolin alcohols and lanolin acids.

Lanolin is produced by the sebaceous glands in the sheep's skin to coat the fleece. This helps with shedding water as well as providing moisture to the skin of the sheep.

People use lanolin in medicines and cosmetics because it helps to rehydrate the skin and prevent excess moisture loss. Lanolin is also used to lubricate and protect metals.
