In addition to being a prescription drug, lansoprazole is available as an over-the-counter drug under the name Prevacid, according to Drugs.com. Lansoprazole is part of a class of drugs known as protonpump inhibitors.
Lansoprozole is used for the prevention and treatment of several conditions where excessive stomach acid causes problems, including intestinal and stomach ulcers, erosive esophagitis, where stomach acid does damage to the esophagus, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, among others. Although it does prevent the effects of heartburn, lansoprozole is not effective for immediate relief, and must be taken for the indicated amount of time in order to work correctly.
