According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Kodiak is the largest bear in the world. An adult male may stand more than 10 feet tall on his hind legs and weigh more than 1,500 pounds.
A subspecies of the brown or grizzly bear, Kodiak bears are exclusive to the Kodiak Islands of southern Alaska, where there are an estimated 3,500 in the wild as of 2014. This omnivorous bear has a diverse diet, feeding on grass, plants, berries and fish. Naturally active during the day, the bears adopt a nocturnal lifestyle when pressed for food or space.
