The largest freshwater lake in the world by volume is Lake Baikal in Siberia. Its deepest point is 1,637 meters and it holds about 20 percent of the world's fresh surface water. The largest freshwater lake by surface area is Lake Superior.
Lake Superior is located on the United States and Canada border. It has 31,700 square miles of surface area. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron can sometimes be considered a single lake because they are connected by the Mackinac Straight and have the same surface elevation. That would make Lake Michigan-Huron larger than Lake Superior by surface area with 45,410 square miles of surface area.
