Several large gold nuggets have been found; the largest ever discovered weighed 158.78 pounds or 72.02 kilograms. Named "Welcome Stranger," it was unearthed near Dunolly, Victoria, Australia in 1869.
The weight of "Welcome Stranger" beat the record of a nugget nicknamed "Welcome Nugget" by roughly 6 pounds. In those times, gold nuggets were quickly melted down into ingots. Ingots are metals that are formed into shapes, such as bricks, for better storage and handling. A gold nugget was discovered in 2014, but it weighed less than 15 pounds. Today, only a handful of gold nuggets over 30 pounds are known to exist.
